One of the things I love most about teaching is realising that, despite everyone's different experience levels, we're often working on exactly the same things.
This week, in my own singing lesson, I was talking about tongue position, jaw freedom, breath support and making everything work just that little bit more efficiently.
The same topics come up in my teaching too.
Some of my students are singing for the very first time. Others are preparing for exams, auditions or performances. The level changes, but the process doesn't.
We're all striving to be a little better than we were yesterday.
We're all curious.
We're all learning.
We're all discovering that tiny adjustments can make a surprisingly big difference.
The biggest transformation I often see isn't actually vocal.
It's confidence.
Walking into your first lesson can feel terrifying. You're singing in front of someone you've only just met, wondering if they'll judge you or whether you're "good enough".
By the second or third lesson, you start to relax.
A few months later, you're willing to experiment, make mistakes and trust the process. That's when the real progress begins.
And that confidence rarely stays in the studio.
I've seen it spill over into presentations at work, public speaking, joining choirs, auditions, interviews and everyday life.
Learning to sing isn't just about producing beautiful sounds.
It's about learning to trust yourself.
Whether you're preparing for your first karaoke night or your next performance on an opera stage, we're all still chasing the same thing: to communicate music honestly, keep learning and enjoy the process.
That's one of the reasons I love this job so much.
